How to Piece a Rail Fence Block – Mini Block Monday #19

Rail Fence blocks come in all shapes and sizes and there’s probably a million ways to arrange this block to create all sorts of effects. I decided to keep it simple with a Rail Fence four patch that creates a cute spinning effect in the middle.

Do you know what helps me the most? Sharing the video! Please share this video with your quilting friends, or even consider including the photos in your guild newsletter. I would LOVE that!

Looking for a pattern for the Rail Fence quilt block? It’s all in the video! I’m trying something new with these Mini Block Monday videos and including all the information in the video itself. Just hit “pause” when you need to and write down the pieces to cut.

Is that just not your thing? Here’s a snapshot of the patchwork pieces to get you started:

Mini Rail Fence Quilt Block Piecing Instructions

This is probably one of the easiest and fastest quilt blocks we’ve pieced together so far. No triangles, no trimming! Just piece your rectangles together and make sure the units measure 2 inches square before piecing them together to create the block.

You can switch the color effect just by rotating the squares. A super quick doll quilt could be made from piecing up a batch of twelve of these Rail Fence blocks in alternating colors. I’m sure Ms. Bunny would love a quilt like that!

I’ve just switched home sewing machines and I have to say, I love piecing and machine quilting on the Janome 1600! This straight stitch machine has narrow feed dogs and adjustable presser foot pressure that make piecing bulky seams and tricky points so much easier. Click Here to learn about the Janome 1600.

Thanks for these mini blocks Leah! They are just a quick bit of sewing to perk up the day! I hope your renovation is going well.

Thank you Terri! I’m throwing in the towel on the renovation and looking for a contractor. I could handle this if it was only one room, but I’ve realized doing the whole basement at once is way over my head.
