Piece an Hourglass Quilt Block – Mini Block Monday #3

Who would have thought an Hourglass Quilt Block could save the day? That’s exactly what happened in the book Mally the Maker and the Queen in the Quilt! This is one of my favorite blocks for this reason and I’ve only just begun to imagine how Mally will use this block in the next book!

Looking for a pattern for this Hourglass Quilt Block? It’s all in the video! I’m trying something new with these Mini Block Monday videos and including all the information in the video itself. Just hit “pause” when you need to and write down the pieces to cut.

Is that just not your thing? Here’s a snapshot of the patchwork pieces to get you started:

This quilt block includes one Hourglass Squares. Don’t be intimidated by all the steps of making this fiddly unit. It’s essentially like piecing a set of half square triangles, then piecing them together again the same way! Click Here to find a more detailed tutorial on piecing Hourglass Squares (HGSs)

You’ll want to trim this unit down to measure 1 1/2-inches square before piecing the block. You will have one extra Hourglass Square left over and you can use it to piece a second Hourglass Block.

Here’s what it looks like when you finish your Hourglass quilt block!
