How to Make a Patchwork Scarf on a Longarm Part 2

Last week I shared a post on quilting a bargello quilt on the longarm. This week I’m turning that quilt into two infinity patchwork scarves with in-the-frame sewing so there was minimal finishing on my home machine. Click Here to find the video on Youtube.

Remember, we’re making two patchwork scarves in-the-frame. This is kind of like in-the-hoop embroidery projects that stitch out and create a finished bag or quilt block all in the hoop. Only on a longarm, we have a LOT more space to play!

I use minky fabric for the backing, which is a super soft, stretchy, and fluffy material. Be sure to check out the video on minky fabric if you are unfamiliar with the fabric!

My son James got in on the fun this week! Be sure to watch all the way to the end of the video…

I did make a mistake while stitching this scarf. As I quilted across the frame to secure the minky fabric to the quilt, I didn’t quilt far enough to the inside of the scarf area. Some of the ugly stitching remained on the edges and I had to stitch back over the edges with my walking foot on my home machine.

That kind of defeated the point of stitching the layers on the frame, but it was a good learning experience! Make sure to stitch within the project a bit further than you think you need to so you’re left with only pretty stitching along the edges.

Check the Width of the Scarf

I also found after finishing the two scarves that I could have actually made 3 from this quilt! I think 4-6 inches wide is plenty for a quilted scarf because the extra quilting and batting ends up feeling a lot bulkier around your neck. These scarves will be perfect for the dead of winter when my neck is seriously cold, but probably will be too heavy and hot during the rest of the year.

I really enjoyed this experience and learned a LOT about quilting and sewing a project in-the-frame. This has given me a lot of ideas for other in-the-frame projects like pillows and tote bags. What would you like to see next?

Let’s go quilt,
