Typecast Blogging Tour: the Letter D!

Today I’m participating in the Whole Circle Studio Typecast Blog Tour! My friend Sheri Cilfaldi-Morrill has designed a super cool alphabet for you to piece with English Paper Piecing. She sent me the letter D for Day and here’s what I made:

I’m still on my dupioni silk kick and pieced this letter with a combination of silk and cotton. Turning the silk over on the paper pieces template was pretty easy. The paper is nice and stiff so it holds the shape even when working with thicker fabric like silk.

Once I pieced the letter, I was so addicted to hand stitching, I couldn’t stop! I stitched the rectangle to another piece of silk, then turned the edge under to create the beautiful circle. At this point, I had the idea to turn this letter D into a hoop quilt for my wall.

More fabric, and a bit of machine blanket stitching and the top was complete. Now for quilting! I decided to keep the quilting really simple with my favorite Undulation design in the background and Microstippling in the area around the letter. This helped make the “D” really pop out of the hoop.

This is my latest, and largest hoop quilt! I need to make two more so my wall of mini quilts will be complete!

Sheri is selling the letters in many different ways along with an instruction pattern to guide you through the steps to piece them. Click Here to learn more.
