I’m delighted to say that I’m more than halfway done with my new book, Leah Day’s Goddess Quilts: Journey into Light and Love Through Art Quilting!

Writing the Book of my Heart
This book has been a challenge. I’ve had this on my list of things I “must do” for years. It sounds silly, but my heart has literally ached to make this book.
But for some reason I kept putting it off. Now I know why – this book was a lot harder to write than I expected!
I think a lot of the difficulty came from understanding what this book IS and what it isn’t. For most of July I debated this very question. At first I started with the blog posts and read back through everything I’d shared online about this quilt series since 2009. I cobbled together the stories with a mix of old posts and new insight. But that didn’t end up working very well.
I edited and reconsidered my outline. I tried again without the blog posts. It still didn’t work.
I ended up doing a massive amount of word slaughter over the last month. I wrote in one direction, then deleted and tried again. It seems like this book had babies because I completely outlined two other books I could write next!
Eventually I realized I just couldn’t write this book in Word. I needed to see it and feel it in my hands. So I opened InDesign and began laying out the book with pictures on the pages.
Suddenly the right words began to flow. The right format for the book took shape. The words and the photos clicked with the desire in my heart and suddenly everything started working perfectly. I couldn’t be happier with this new book!
I have one last part to write. Josh and James are going to get out of dodge this weekend so I can knock it out. I can’t wait to finish up these last chapters and dive deep into photography! This is going to be gorgeous.
So what is this Goddess Quilt Book?
I knew from the beginning that this wasn’t going to be a technique book. You will not find a pattern for a goddess quilt inside. I also pulled the skill building techniques I’d originally planned to include. They just don’t fit. It doesn’t work to top off a story about overcoming grief with a lesson on how to do fusible applique! This is a story of my quilting journey, not a how-to book.
Techniques, lessons and goddess quilt patterns may become a different book, or maybe a master class workshop. That information will be somewhere else, in something else, some length of time down the road (Wow, that really nails it down, doesn’t it? LOL!)
I had to reach a point that this was okay. My story is enough and I can’t wait to share it with you.
