How to Piece the Crown of Scraps Friendship Block

We have a beautiful Crown of Scraps Quilt block to piece today for the Friendship Quilt Along.  I hope you’re up for a little test in your piecing ability! You’ll absolutely build new piecing skills with this month’s scrappy, heavily pieced block. See what I mean in this video:

How to Piece the Crown of Scraps Block

You’ll need to know how to piece two units to make a Crown of Scraps quilt block. Click Here to learn how to piece half square triangles. You’ll need quite a few of these for form the center of this quilt block.

Click Here to find a tutorial on piecing Hourglass Squares. You’ll make a mess of these to create the cute scrappy border for this block.

But in order to get that border to fit, you must make sure your piecing with an accurate 1/4-inch seam allowance. If you’re piecing with a scant seam allowance, it’s going to cause you lots of problems. Learn more about why I HATE scant seam allowances here.

Of course, if you’ve been using scant seam allowances for years and it works for you, go with that! My experience is different, but that doesn’t mean there’s a right or wrong way to piece.
