WIP Wednesday – More Bobbins Needed!

It’s Wednesday and I’m winding bobbins:

I can’t believe I actually emptied 25 bobbins of white Isacord Thread in less than a month! Today I was back upstairs winding more because I’m quilting so much white thread I really should get a second bobbin holder and start winding double the number at a time.

I like to wind on this little SideWinder I picked up from Mary Jo’s Cloth Store. It’s small, relatively quiet, and winds bobbins faster and better than my machine. It’s one efficient little piece of equiptment!

It comes with an AC adapter, but I usually run it off batteries on the kitchen table. I always use a spool stand, no matter what type of thread I’m winding because it always works better that way.

All told, it takes around 30 minutes to wind 25 bobbins this way. And yes, if you’re seriously blasting through quilts in free motion, you can easily run through 25 bobbins in a month!

As for what I’m quilting with so much white thread…

  3. Leah I have been reading your blog for about 6 months now and I love it. My question is just an inquiry. What machine do you have that you free motion quilt on? The reason is, I am looking into different machines and since I really can not afford a quilter, and because my machine was my Grandmother's I am looking at different machines. I really like the way yours stitches from the videos and was wondering.

Okay, maybe you aren't talking about that beautiful quilt on your machine, but it sparked an idea….Isn't sharing fun?!

I still have to wonder you are up to….

  5. Love your current project! Looks amazing! I'm working on the mystery quilt Easy Street by Bonnie Hunter. I'm on the last step of putting the blocks together. I'm going to quilt it one block at a time and bind the pieces together using your method in quilt along #7. I've used that method one other time and it works marvelous! Thanks for all you do! Happy quilting.

Can't wait to hear more about this less secret than your last post about it project! It looks nice 🙂

  7. I have a few of these little bobbin winders. I keep them with my different treadles and hand crank sewing machines. I just don't like to wind bobbins on those people powered machines. Have a great day!

Oh I'd love one of those bobbin winders … must look into it. And I lvoe the idea of having all those bobbins ready. But I only have two bobbins. LOL I think I'd better buy some more. I can't wait to see what that project is. You're certainly building the suspense.

Okay, I'm waiting but it's hard to be patient. That is a gorgeous WIP. I hate having to stop to wind bobbins and then rethread my machine. I didn't think those little winder would work that well. I guess I'll have to rethink that!

Oh my gosh, I've never heard of a bobbin winder! That looks super useful. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of those.

I am super curious…a new Craftsy class? I can't wait to find out…whatever it is, it looks like a fun quilt to do.

A quilting buddy gave me a bobbin holder like the one you have in your photo a while back and I absolutely loved it for keeping my bobbins out in plain sight and accessible while keeping them in place so they don't get lost or slip off the sewing table and on to the floor!!

  16. Malini says:

Wow! your quilting looks fabulous as always. Can't wait for the secret to be out.

  17. Melissa Wise says:

What ever it is, Leah, it's gorgeous!! Thanks for the tip about the bobbin winder. I've always thought having to stop everything and replenish my bobbins was such a momentum killer. I'm definitely going to check that little machine out!
