Day 153 – Spiky Fern
Spring is finally here and new green plants are shooting up everywhere! Even in my quilting room!
Here’s a new plant I’m calling Spiky Fern:
WHOOOHOOO! It was 2 days of hard work but our taxes are DONE! Whew!
Amazingly enough, once I actually got started working on the taxes, they’re really not that bad. I personally use H&R Block’s Tax Cut program and like it very much.
This program really makes sense out of extremely complicated wording from the tax sheet.
It feels great to have that off my shoulders because next week I have a lecture and workshop for the Piedmont Quilters Guild in Greensboro, NC. I’m really getting excited about teaching free motion quilting and am so glad I have the weight of taxes off my mind.
So while I dance around the room with lighthearted, tax free frivolity, you sit tight and watch how to quilt Spiky Fern:
Inspiration – This design was really created after looking back at all of my fern type designs. We’ve had Fern Filler, Elodea, Leaf Vein, Rainforest Leaf, Bubble Wand, and Heart Vine.
I really like these types of designs and will start playing with them more often. There’s something fun about laying down a wiggly vine shape and then filling it up with crazy leaves!
Difficulty Level – Intermediate. The design itself is not hard. The biggest challenge is maintaining an even distance and size to your leaves.
Design Family – Stem Centered.
Directional Texture – 1 Direction. This design really has a definite starting point and because all the spiky fern fronds seem to grow from this point and curl up and back down around it.
Suggestions for Use – This design is pretty different, and I keep thinking of the Square within a Square blocks. There are always those little triangles left over where one square turns into the other. Maybe put some Spiky Fern right there!

I really like this design. It reminds me of feathers but leafy. I'm working on a quilt from the book Bold and Beautiful and I think this will be one of my filler designs. I want the fillers to keep the garden look that are in the flowers that I painted on the fabric.
