I just did the modification of my quilting foot ,your a genius it works perfectly ,thank you . Think most of my problem was the noise of the needle bar hitting , it really distracted me .You could teach these designers a thing or two.

So glad that Malini provided that "rant" opportunity for you! LOL! Interesting how hard we find it to break free of the implied, or otherwise, "shoulds" that came from some ancient dark era!!!!!

  3. Thanks Leah for commenting and giving your insight to my question. I will try it again using the different methods and will definitely let you know. Thanks again!

Thanks for your no-nonsense answers, Leah. I always know you will tell it straight.
You have shared a wealth of information here. You are a very giving individual with a lot of common sense. I don't often comment on your posts, but I always read them.

For the question about the bobbin, she needs to leave the little silver disc in the bobbin case.

I have a Bernina, too and I don't even know what it does, but my machine won't stitch well without it.

In fact, mine got damaged once and I had to buy a whole new bobbin case, just because of that little spring or whatever it is!!

I just put the bobbin washer on top of the disc and it worked fine 🙂

Ha ha! Can I tell how you many of the "needle bar hitter" feet I've killed? THREE! I've got mad skill skillz! I use a non-springy open toe foot and honestly, I am WAY better with it. I got it on the morning of a FMQ class I signed up for cuz I pulled it out and found it almost broken the night before. I rocked that so hard in class, like it was what I always used.

    Hi Leah,
Thank you for answering all my questions. Its always fun to read your response ;)….

Same as Marelize bobbin washers didn't work for my machines either. I have a Borther and one computerized Singer machine. As soon as I put the bobbin washers, my thread started jamming and broke a few needles. I don't use them any more.

Even cheater needle, I broke the first one. But then I started using the strongest of them and it doesn't break anymore. And hiding threads has been a breeze now :-). Thanks for the tip and product Leah.

I'm so glad to be back on Quilt Alongs.
    cheers,
    Malini

Dear Leah – YOUR NEW BOOK CAME TODAY!!! Oh my, I am an ole great-granny and cannot believe that your youth and energy produced such a delicious, beautiful, filled-to-the-gills book of your quilting designs! I do my own quilting on a DSM, and LOVE to include a variety of designs — I won't have trouble any more, thinking of "what shall I quilt." I am so very appreciative of your 365 project.

Leah, you convinced me to "break" my foot and I love it! I had already cut the toe (I thought that's what the red lines were for!) but stopping the hopping fixed all my problems. Thanks! Lastly, I have found one machine that is affordable that has a pressure adjuster and it's my baby! Brother PC420. I swear by that thing and it was only 250. Anyways, just pointing that out 😀 Thanks again!

A thousand thank you's!!!! This afternoon I took a deep breath and modified my quilting foot that came with my machine. It's so much better, it feels like I've gotten a new machine! You've truly revolutionized and instantly improved my FMQ!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

Wow! I love your explanations! Im bookmarking this blog! Thank you so much! Im off to fix my darning foot!

Thank you so much for this! I've just started following along with you, and have that foot, and I was having to zoom along at breakneck speed without any idea of where I was going! I've surgerized my foot now, so I hope to get started soon! And for the record, I have a Singer Fashion Mate 237 (manufactured around 1965) – a beautiful all metal machine I bought for $80 that works like a dream! I hope it works as well FMQ as it does for everything else I do.

  13. Yes! Thank you for showing me that yes it is ok to mess with my darning foot! I knew some of the problems I was having was due to the darning foot bouncing about BUT… Just a quick expansion on the alteration of the foot, mine was supplied with my machine (Basic non digital Janome) it is a general darning foot but if I remember right it is specific to the Janome brand, so the needle bar extension is actually 'U'd already, I ended up having to clip off the excess part of the bar so it wouldn't interfere with the motion of the machine, then the rubber band trick didn't work for me, I tried various types and thickness of rubber bands and I couldn't get a decent height setting on the foot part, or if I did the band slipped and I thought I had ruined my foot.
Undaunted I tried different alternatives and came up with: Thin jewelers or craft wire! Wrap it around the post about 7 times (for my particular foot) and if it needs to be adjusted I can simply unwrap or wrap more. I found the flexible copper wire to be the best for this, really malleable. Best part is I found it at a dollar store for a buck ages ago, a small spool is only a dollar 😉

  14. I just talked to a rep for Juki sewing machines and he said that he never heard of magic bobbin washers but also said that the Juki does not need washers for free motion quilting. I think I saw you use a Juki sewing machine, but am not sure. What is your input on this? I was just getting ready to order the washers, but now am not sure, after reading the reviews.

  15. Leah Day says:

I found the bobbin washers essential for my Juki TL. I really struggled to get good stitch quality on that machine and to stop it from breaking thread constantly. The only thing I found that worked was bobbin washers and Isacord thread, but that's just my experience!
