How to Piece a Patriot Star Block – Mini Block Monday #21

It’s hard to believe it’s nearly June and the 4th of July, one of my favorite holidays, is right around the corner! This year I’m celebrating with several patriotic quilt blocks in red, white, and blue and this is our first – a Patriot Star!

Do you know what helps me the most? Sharing the video! Please share this video with your quilting friends, or even consider including the photos in your guild newsletter. I would LOVE that!

Looking for a pattern for this Patriot Star quilt block? It’s all in the video! I’m trying something new with these Mini Block Monday videos and including all the information in the video itself. Just hit “pause” when you need to and write down the pieces to cut.

Is that just not your thing? Here’s a snapshot of the patchwork pieces to get you started:

Mini Patriot Star Quilt Block Piecing Instructions

This Patriot Star Quilt Block is the most complex mini block we’ve pieced so far! Take your time piecing all the units and putting the block together step by step.

First you will need a set of four Half Square Triangles from the white and blue rectangles. Watch the video to see how this method works, and how to trim your HSTs to measure 1 inch square.

Next, you will turn these Half Square Triangles into a Square in a Square Block. First measure the pieced HSTs and make sure the center square measures 1 1/2 inches square.

Then cut your red squares in half to create four triangles and piece them to both sides of the block, trim the little flags that extend. Then piece the second set of triangles to the top and bottom of the block. Trim the finished Square in a Square to measure 2 inches square.

The final step is to make a batch of Flying Geese units. Use the larger blue square and four white squares to create all of these units using the Four at a Time Flying Geese Method. Follow the instructions in the video to piece the units and trim them to measure 1 1/4 x 2 inches.

Whew! Finally you’re ready to arrange the block and piece the units together. Here’s what it looks like when you finish piecing your Patriot Star Quilt Block:
