A Short Story From Quilst! Podcast #109

I have a wonderful podcast episode for you this week! Today I’ll be reading a short story by my husband Josh Day written in my Mally the Maker universe! The story is called Scant and the Quarter Scamming Baby Chicks. As a quilter, I hope you understand the reference! (Scant and quarter-inch seams.)

You can also listen to the podcast or download it to your computer using this player:

The short story starts at 29:35 in case you want to jump right into the main feature.

Spoiler Alert! You really should read Mally the Maker and the Queen in the Quilt BEFORE listening to this story. There are a few spoilers about what happens at the end of the book and who is left in charge of the magical world of Quilst.

A short book description: Mally Spencer is a ten-year old girl who’s been quite upset since her grandmother went missing six months ago. She finds herself alone in Grandma’s house one day and begins exploring an unfinished quilt in her grandma’s sewing room. Suddenly, she finds herself in a world inside the quilt. Could this be where Grandma has been?

What’s Going on with Leah This Week

I’m finishing up my Eye of Calm goddess quilt and stitching the faced binding in place. After a bit of obsessive ripping with the quilting designs, I finally stopped being such a perfectionist and left mistakes in the quilt. These tiny flaws ended up being so unnoticeable, I couldn’t find them when I was only a few inches away.

Unfortunately, I ran into a much bigger problem. I used trapunto on this quilt, so I had to get it wet to dissolve the water soluble thread. One of purples bled like crazy and ultimately changed a teal colored fabric to a light lavender. This was most likely due to not washing the purples, but I have no idea why this particular fabric was so reactive.

Lesson learned – no more dupioni silk! Why use fabrics that are extra delicate, bleed, pill, and fray so easily?! I know I love batik fabrics, so I’m just going to USE BATIK FABRICS! Okay, enough yelling. We have a giveaway to announce!

We Have a New Winner for This Week’s Giveaway

Every week I give away a 2.5 inch strip pack of fabric to one lucky member of our Quilt Friends club! This is a private, NON-social media group where quilters can make friends all over the world and share their pictures and stories without having to wade through the mire that is social media. That’s right, it’s completely disconnected from Facebook, Twitter, Google, Instagram, and any other big tech firm. We hit 400 members the other day and it’s been such a pleasure creating this group and being part of it!

As a member, you’re automatically eligible to win the weekly fabric giveaway, plus you also get an exclusive How Do I Quilt This? video every month where you share a quilt and I print out the picture and give you quilting designs!

I hope you enjoy the short story and are intrigued about the world of Quilst. If you’d like to learn the whole story about the magical world inside the quilt, please check out my book Mally the Maker.
