Tracing a New Goddess Quilt, Quilting Podcast #90

Have you ever started something and thought it would go one way, only to find it went a completely different way? That’s kinda how I feel about this podcast episode! I shared news from the week as I traced a new goddess quilt onto freezer paper and talked a lot about the quilt design, working with leather with my son, and goals of creating with him every weekend. Enjoy!

Tracing a New Goddess Quilt

Last week I created the master pattern for my new goddess quilt, Eye of Calm, so this week I’m taking the next step in the process and tracing the design onto wide 30-inch butcher paper I found at Hobby Lobby. This is the first steps to Freezer Paper Piecing, the technique I’ll be using to construct this new quilt top.

Tracing a new Goddess Quilt

My freezer paper is traced and now I’m ready for the next step!

I’m so pleased with this new goddess quilt design! She’s very simple and peaceful. No, she doesn’t have facial features because I just couldn’t get that to work out right and decided to stop fighting it. I used the same smooth curve from Life and Fire, the other pregnant goddess quilt I’ve made and I love the effect.

Figuring Out the Podcast

I’ll be honest, I’m trying to figure out exactly what to share in these weekly podcasts. I’ve found the tutorials really aren’t working on YouTube. Many people are confused when they click on a video and I don’t immediately begin sharing on the topic. So I don’t think the tutorials work very well, but I do enjoy sharing the introductions and what I’m really working on behind the scenes.

I also enjoy interviewing quilters and crafters too. Please get in touch if you’d like to be on the show! No, you don’t have to be a professional quilter or designer. I like talking to all quilters of all skill levels and experiences. The more the merrier!

Working with Leather with James

This weekend I put my foot down with James. We’ve gotten into a bad habit of shopping instead of creating. We go to Walmart or Hobby Lobby and we find some new craft project idea or tool, but then we don’t go home and use it and make something together.

So on Sunday I gave James a choice: we’re either going to head out to the wood shop and clean it up so we can turn a new pen together or go downstairs and work with leather. The wood shop is completely trashed out so James wisely choose leather work!

Messy Wood Shop

Uggh! The wood shop is so messy I can barely walk in the door!

My plan was to make a nice leather cover for a foam footstool I had. James had other ideas. He spotted some pouches I’d made for one of Josh’s costumes and wanted to make one for himself. I adjusted my plans and went with it. James ended up sewing, punching leather holes, setting rivets and snaps. All around, it was a terrific project!

But sadly, my 11 year old has gotten really picky about photos and I’m respecting his wishes. He didn’t want me to take a photo of the pouch or him making it. Maybe next time!

New Quilting Friends Club

This week we’ve officially launched a new Quilting Friend’s Club! This new platform is completely off Facebook and set up for quilters to share photos, start conversations, and make new friends.

Click Here to check out the new Quilting Friend’s Club!

Yes, this is a paid membership site which we’re using to help support this podcast and the free tutorials I share each week. Charging this fee helps support Josh and I and it keeps out all the nonsense – the people that don’t want to be nice, the bots, spam, and other awful things that have made other social platforms no fun.

New Quilting Group

Check out our new quilting group, now off Facebook and so much more fun!

We built this because no matter how much I’ve fiddled with the apps here on the blog, it’s simply not as easy for you guys to post photos here. The interaction is different too and it’s hard to feel as connected. I want to make more quilting friends and this new club is perfectly designed for that.

Please know that I’m not going to quit sharing free tutorials online. I will continue to share the quilt along, new podcasts, blog posts, Frame Quilting Friday posts, and new designs all for free. This club is just a new place for me to share and be supported by this quilting community.

I just came across this article about your Goddess. Is there a pattern for this or will there be?

I plan to offer a master pattern of this Eye of Calm goddess soon. It will not have instructions, but be a simple line drawing with three sizes to create. That will make it a lot cheaper and you can use any technique you like to create it! More details on that ocming soon!
