Goodbye Tanookie

Yesterday our door bell rang with some very bad news. Our neighbor had found our cat, Tanookie, on the side of the road. She had been hit by a car sometime overnight or in the early morning and died.

Tanookie became our cat in 2012, along with an orange tabby we called Shy Guy. Both cats were sort of hand-me-downs from my Dad who was working and away from home so much that he couldn’t keep the cats anymore. Instantly the cats became part of the family hanging out on the back porch, sneaking inside anytime they got a chance, and stalking chickens for fun in the yard.

In 2013 I could tell Shy Guy was getting old and I didn’t know how much time we had left with him so I created a stepping stone with his and Tanookie’s paw prints.

I’m so happy that I made this because now, just three years later, we’ve lost both cats. You really never know how much time you have.

What’s funny is the very things that annoyed me the most about Tanookie are the things I’ll likely miss the most. She had a habit of stalking out our doors and rushing in whenever we were carrying groceries or packages inside so we’d have to chase her through the house to throw her back outside again.

She loved to be petted, but for only around 30 seconds. Any more than that and she’d attack your hand viciously. She was an excellent hunter, but really wanted to get credit for her kills so she’d leave lots of dead little bodies all over the carport and stepping stones.

She was a pretty contradictory cat – both loving and mean, cuddly and surly, and maybe that’s what made her so fun to have around. You really never knew what was coming next with Tanookie!

We’re all going to miss her unique personality. I know I’ll probably end up with another calico cat soon, but never one quite as weird, fun, and temperamental as this sweet cat.

With love,

Leah Day

    Dear Leah,
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I know by myself what it means to loose such a good friend at your side and also this way. It's always hard.
    Greetings and hugs,
    Rike

  2. Ahh I'm so sorry for your loss! The stepping stone is very nice! And you will be able to have a little pc of them with you forever. Prayers and hugs coming your way!

Sorry to hear about your sweet kitty. Pets become part of the family, and even though they are only "animals" and not humans, we still get used to having them in our lives. Another kitty will help fill the gap left by Tanookie, but as you said, they have their own personalities, each unique to enjoy for the time we are given with them…..

This has been a hard year for my family and close friends and their furbabies. Each one that passed brought tears to my eyes, and I am just grateful I still have all of mine! So sorry to hear of your loss. They really are a parts of our family!

I am so sorry about the loss of your cat–I know how difficult it can be to lose a beloved pet. I hope that you and your family will consider making your next cat an indoor pet. The health and longevity of outdoor cats can be severely reduced and the suffering and loss that they bring to the wild bird population is horrible. I hope that you and your other readers (and fans) will take this comment in the spirit in which it is made–I love animals and hate to see the unnecessary death and suffering.

Very saddened to read about Tanookie. It was very nice see pictures and to learn of her quirks and things you loved about her. May happy memories help you and your family deal with her loss.

Thank you for such a loving tribute to both kitties. You gave them a wonderful home and life.

  9. So sorry to read about your loss. I love your stepping stone. I lost my 14 year old sweet girl last summer and welcomed 2 sibling kitties, a male and a female, into our home in late December. I recommend getting "double trouble" as they are so much fun and entertain themselves.

  10. Oh, I'm so sorry, Leah. Our Mokie looks very much like Tanookie, and is only a couple of years older. I LOVE what you did with the stepping stone. Hugs to you and your family at this sad time.

So sorry! I love my fur babies so much too & would be lost without them. I refuse to put mine outside, the three I have are 7 months old & have never been out in the big world, cause I don't want them hit by cars or ATVs. Love your quilts by the way, 1st time posting. 😉
