Medical Vacation?
Yes, I am on vacation this week…sort of! Yesterday I left home to help someone else with a medical situation and this involves me staying at their home.
Since I’m away from my house and studio, I don’t have a sewing machine, but I decided to bring my small stash of felted wool – my latest quilting addiction:
What I love most about felt applique is you don’t actually have to stitch along the edge because felted wool doesn’t unravel. The stitches are 100% decorative and I’m looking forward to experimenting with all sorts of funky embroidery designs stitched in bright embroidery thread.
Unfortunately I’ve been building this collection of felted wool like it’s a precious, extremely scarce material. Yep, I’ve been hoarding this collection of beautiful felted fabrics, so this week my goal is to slice into this fabric, stitch together those dots, and make something fun in between running errands.
So that’s what I’m up to this week. What are you creating? Have you ever helped someone recover from surgery? Did you make a special project during that time, or find it too challenging to balance the two tasks at once?
One thing I’ve learned – portability is key! Having a project with needle and thread already started is really nice to grab and stitch without having to think too hard or make major decisions. Sometimes all you can do is sit and stitch and that’s okay!
Let’s go quilt,
Leah Day
Your dots look like Christmas tree ornaments.

Luckily my Brother quilting sewing machine is portable so I can take it with us when we are camping. Nearly finished with my Daughter Quilt, then I can start making Christmas squares.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Home the same day? Wow. Was it a full hip replacement? Good luck with the recuperation. I had my knee replaced a year and a half ago, it was way more time in the hospital!
Your felt coins are cute – I'd be making myself some felt jewelery if I had your stash. There are some great ideas on Pinterest. I've had more than my share of time in hospital, and I always have either a hand-stitched hexie kit or some cross stitch to keep my hands busy. Just lying there doesn't feel right, and I think sewing, like knitting, is good mental therapy.
My husband had his hip replaced 2 weeks ago and he's walking without a cane now. Pain free for the most part, PT twice a week but no sweat. Beat decision he ever made.
I wish your father a speedy recovery. Maybe this is a great window for more Father/Daughter machine embroidery designs ? (hint, hint….your ME designs are stunning). I think your felt circles are lovely and I look forward to seeing what you create with them.

I try to always have an applique project to work on that I can quick grab if I'm going to be sitting somewhere for a period of time. It's amazing how much you can get done in 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there
I completely agree! Small progress really can add up over time.
Oh yes! We're working on several fun ideas. Digitizing a flower is almost as good as enjoying them in the garden!
I absolutely agree! I'll definitely check out the felted jewelry. It sounds pretty!
What a cool project to have at hand while doing all that waiting around. I hope your dad recovers well, it's amazing how quickly people are up and about after hip replacements! I've this weekend finished up a single-bed quilt (for a gift) and shifted the pile of UFOs from one spare bed to the other spare bed while 'taking inventory' to figure out what to do next. Have a good week!
I know that you are Left-Handed – and I assume that you sew your felted wool Left-Handed. Would be so kind as to post some tutorials or videos on how YOU do it for the other Left-Handed Quilters out there in blogland. I, for one, would really appreciate it – thanks – ;))
