MQX Teacher of the Year

I’m still trying to wrap my brain around this one. Last night I was recognized as Machine Quilting Teacher of the Year!

I can’t describe how this feels. I’m so overwhelmed and thankful to be recognized this way. I almost immediately started crying because it just feels so good to be appreciated for what you do!

When I got on stage I had no idea what would come out of my mouth but it was something like: “Thank you so much for this recognition. I can’t believe this. I’m really just a girl that makes videos in her basement.”

So much of what I do is alone, on my own with a camera and sewing machine. To be recognized Teacher of the Year feels amazing and I’m filled with gratitude for all my students who shared their love this way.

Thank you so much!

Congratulations! You have earned it. Thanks to you I know how to quilt by machine!

  6. Leah, a couple of years ago when I started FMQ, you were my go to in learning with your 365 designs. I used so many of them and bought your book to help me decide what a quilt needed. I am grateful for all your videos. I recently bought a long arm because I could not push a quilt through a machine anymore, but it is all hand guided, no pantos, and your help is the foundation for my quilting. CONGRATULATIONS on your award. Thank you for your generosity!

  7. Congrats! You're an amazing teacher and totally deserving of this!!!

  8. Congratulations, off course the teacher of the year should be you, you do a great job with the videos, I love them, and look at them when I need some tips and tricks. Congratulations, Leah!! I do not know if my voice was taken into account. I sent a complaint to MQX because It seemed that I could not vote since I live overseas (from you). So I explained why I would vote for you if I had the right. I am so glad you won! You work so hard. You really deserve it.

Congratulation, Leah! Your simplicity as a free-motion teacher touch the hearts of many quilters in believing they too, could quilt on a domestic machine. Thank you for all your hard work, videos, blogs and sharing your family with us.

  47. Mania says:

Congratulations Leah! When a few years ago I started a wonderful adventure with patchwork and quilting, your films were – and still are – my guides. Your movies also show the passion and love that you treat your work. A quilted Josh shown in the movies is a great idea. I admire you and greetings from Poland

  48. Ann says:

Congratulations! You make very effective instructional videos and you have developed a process that helps students learn a very complex skill. You effectively challenge students to do their best and try challenging new skills. You offer the encouragement needed to take those first steps and push through when the going gets tough. I think your honesty in sharing your own struggles helped us all shed our perfectionism. Many artists create beautiful things, but there are few who also have the gift of teaching and the patience to help others as they begin. You also work hard to develop and maintain a supportive online community with students worldwide. I see you as a very gifted artist with a creative spirit who also have the gift of teaching and encouragement. Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with us!

Дорогая Лия! Ваши уроки известны во всем мире! Ваших учеников миллионы! Спасибо за Вашу щедрость и желание делиться знаниями! Поздравляю с заслуженной наградой! Украина.

  50. So happy for you Leah. You were the first online teacher who saved my butt, and taught me pretty much how to quilt on my longarm! Yep you read that right: LONGARM. Your designs and your clear, broken-down instructions gave me the jumping off point, guidance, and confidence I needed to just DO it, on a longarm that I had just bought secondhand off eBay. I've bought both your FMQ spiral bound (thank you–why don't they ALL do this) books and I frequently refer to them as well as back to your 400+ FMQ designs on your website. All I can say is it's about time you got the recognition you so deserve. What's next?! 🙂

  51. Leah Day says:

Awesome Sandra! All the designs translate just as well to longarm so that totally makes sense. As for what's next – I think I want to start teaching how to teach and run a business. That's very different from teaching quilting, but I know so much about business and building from a small investment. I think that's where I'm headed next!

  52. You totally deserve it! You will probably never know how many people quietly learned fmq from you online, but I can tell you I'm one, and when my machine started playing up I went through your checklist and identified the issue and fixed it. Felt so good! I've done your Craftsy classes too, and you are a born teacher. Thank you, and I'm so glad you got the recognition!

  53. Wow, congratulations, Leah!!!! Much deserved, without a doubt!!

  54. Michele says:

I wasn't at the awards ceremony but I was happy to hear the news. Congratulations! You work hard to help everyone learn how to quilt and you certainly deserve this recognition.

  55. Ann Philbeck says:

Congrats to you. You are a great teacher. Ive learned so much from you.

  56. Barbara says:

Congratulations !!!! You really deserve this special award !!! Thank you for all your wonderful and inspiring video lessons !!!

  57. Marion says:

Congratulations from Germany Leah ! If it wasn't for you I would still quilt my quilts with a stitch in the ditch. Well deserved !!!

  58. Congratulations!!! It's nice that you could be recognized this way. Your lessons in free motion quilting have been, after all, "paying it forward" and so this is a small acknowledgement of that. All of us quilters out here really appreciate what you do and how much you've shown us in your videos!

  59. aubu55 says:

Congratulations!! You are the best in my book, too!

  60. Jackie says:

Congratulations, it is well deserved!!! I always dreamed of being able to machine quilt but it wasn't until I found your site and watched the videos that I finally got the courage to give it a shot. A few weeks ago you wrote a blog about when you started quilting and stressed once again the practice mantra and that was my ahha moment and I've been quilting everyday and it's come together, It's not perfect but the improvement in my quilting; my excitement and enjoyment has increased unbelievably. Thank you

  61. NickiJ says:

Well deserved Leah. You inspire greatness. Your videos are enjoyable to watch, you don't speed through your steps and your close ups are great for that detail. Congratulations!!

  62. Congratulations Leah! This is so awesome and well deserved.
