49. Gridlines and Circuit Board in a Sawtooth Star
This design incorporated lots and lots of lines – straight lines in the star and more lines in the Circuit board design in the background.
When quilting this design, I marked and quilted all the gridlines in the star, then filled some of the Circuit Board in the background free hand and some with marks to help me move through the block and hit all the lines within the star.
This is how I actually fill most of the time, on most of my quilts – wiggling around trying to figure out the best way to hit lines and knock out spaces efficiently. It’s easy enough to do with practice, but hard to explain, kind of like your own unique way of filling your dishwasher.

Josh opted for a lightly more simplistic approach and filled his star with a big spiral instead of the gridlines, but he did quilt all of the Circuit Board on the marked lines of the cheater cloth fabric.
Yes, this block will be a bit time consuming to free motion quilt, but you can always skip the gridlines in the star by trying Josh’s idea to fill that space with a spiral. Always remember – no matter how you quilt it, it’s going to look great!
