Quilt Along #43 – Cough Up Cat Hairball Filler
Yeah, I know I’m pushing the line of gross with the title of this Quilt Along, but I couldn’t resist 🙂
It’s December and it’s that time of year that everything goes a bit crazy and quilting can often be put at the end of a very long list of things that must be done by the holidays.
But this year I’m encouraging you to continue quilting and this month have prepared 3 of the absolute easiest designs to make this possible – Overlapping Designs.
What makes this family so easy? Well…how much have you doodled something that looks like this?
This is Cat Hairball Filler and it’s literally just a series of overlapping loops that cover your quilt with scribble. In fact, Cindy Needham calls a version of this design Scribble, though she stitches it on a much smaller scale, more along the lines of this:
Still, both scales are worthy designs to learn because you never know when you’ll want to let your cat throw up on a quilt…hmmm….not sure I’m exactly selling this design properly!
The truth is, this design is very fast, very easy, and will cover your quilt very quickly with a very unique texture. The hardest part of this design is actually SLOWING DOWN enough to keep your stitches under control.
Let’s watch the video so you can see what I mean:
So ultimately Cat Hairball is very easy, but your stitches will easily become very long if you don’t press your foot on that pedal or concentrate hard on slowing down your hands.
But isn’t it nice to meet a design family that is like this? So easy it’s nearly hard? Just remember this is quick, simple, and best of all, it requires no thought. Just stitch it!
Let’s go quilt,
Leah
STUNNING! You new quilt is going to be AMAZING!
I just love how inspirational your quilting is! Even though I'm not doing the quilt-alongs quite as much since I've started my own, I still love to see what you are inspiring everyone else to do.
And I'm linking to your FMQ tutorials a lot from my blog. They are so well done and perfect to illustrate the techniques. Keep up the great work!
Crazy December alright! I can't wait to get my new machine and go free motion crazy. Love your work and will use the kite tail pattern for my kaffe fasset quilt top.
I love this one. Especially the name!
