Day 55 – Wheat in the Wind

Are you feeling the billowing winds of fall sweeping through your town yet? If not, here’s a filler design that will put you in mind of the chilly weather soon to come!

Inspiration – During my morning doodling, I was flipping through my current copy of Better Homes and Gardens and saw a picture of wheat, probably in an advertisement for wheat crackers or something.

I started playing with the wheat stalk shape, doodling many designs. With the wind whipping around my house, it felt natural to make my wheat bent over from the gale outside.

Design Family – Edge to Edge. While this looks and acts much like a stacking design, you’re really working from one edge to another. This means that this design will work great in big areas, but not so well in tight, complicated spots.

Difficulty Level – Intermediate. Forming the wheat stalks isn’t difficult, it’s the extreme amount of traveling that makes this design a challenge.

Directional Texture – Two Directions. Most edge to edge designs give off a very prominent horizontal or vertical texture. Depending on how much wind you have in your wheat can really change the look of this design, so play with it and see what you come up with!

Suggestions for Use – This design will look terrific stitched over a large surface of your quilt. If you wanted to place it somewhere small, try using in your sashing areas where this design can shine all on its own.
