To set up my machine for walking foot quilting, I do three things:

  • Set the stitch length to 1.5 mm (or a bigger stitch length if needed for that quilt design).
  • Set my needle to always end in the down position.
  • Adjust the speed slider to the lowest (turtle) setting.

Janome 1600 Walking FootA frequent question I’m asked about walking foot quilting is – do you need to use the feed dogs?

YES! Don’t get walking foot quilting confused with free motion / ruler quilting. A walking foot MUST have the feed dogs engaged and stitch length set at 1 mm or above in order to quilt your quilts. Walking foot quilting uses your sewing machine’s normal stitching function to create perfect, evenly spaced stitches.

This means you must rotate the quilt so the direction you’re quilting is always facing the front of the foot. You must always stitch front to back. Well, if you’re hardcore, you can hold down the reverse button and stitch back to front!
