Click Here to learn more about my home sewing machine – You don’t need a massive machine to learn free motion quilting. You just need a sturdy machine and a willingness to practice!

Deluxe Foot Set – This set includes two styles of walking feet, a darning foot, and a ruler foot! These are the feet I use for machine quilting on my Eversewn machine.

Click Here to check out the Grace Qnique 15R – This longarm is perfect for hobby quilters because it’s smaller, less expensive than you think, and easy to learn. The best thing about a longarm is it’s so much faster and easier to move over your quilt. But yep, it does take practice to be able to control it and stitch precisely!

I have my Qnique set up on the Q-Zone Hoop Frame. This frame can be set up as a sit down or standing frame. You can also use your home sewing machine on this frame and upgrade to a longarm machine later. Click Here to see how that works.

Swirling Hearts is a variation of Swirling Feathers. In fact, I think this design is a great way to practice quilting feathers because it’s almost the same shape, but can be quilted less perfectly and still look great.

Difficulty Level – Advanced. As you can tell from the video, there is a lot of travel stitching and careful fitting of the heart shapes together. I rate this as advanced only because those techniques can be tricky, but I firmly believe if you want to learn a design, practice is the key! Don’t be intimidated by the harder designs like Swirling Hearts. It just means you’ll have to do a bit more practice to master it.

Design Family – Stem Centered. This design is based on a swirly style stem. The swirly stem designs like Tongue of Flames and Whiplash fill your quilts in clusters. The bigger you make the stem and petals, the more space you will fill in your quilts.

Where to Quilt It? – Swirling Hearts really wanted to expand when I was free motion quilting on my longarm. I could easily cover several inches of space with one motif, then swirl into the next.

But this free motion quilting design also worked great on a small scale. Just make sure not to use it next to a complex applique shape. This is such a complex design, it would compete for attention with anything delicate.
