Free Motion Quilting Star Flower Stipple – Design #503
I have a fun mash up of free motion quilting designs this week! Learn how to quilt Star Flower Stipple, a terrific combination of Stippling and Star Flower:
Quick Links from this free motion quilting tutorial:
Click Here to learn more about my home sewing machine – This small, affordable sewing machine is quite a workhorse! I love the bright lights and ability to drop the needle down with a tap of the foot pedal.
Deluxe Foot Set – This set includes two styles of walking feet, a darning foot, and a ruler foot! These are the feet I use for machine quilting on my Eversewn machine.
Click Here to check out the Grace Qnique 15R – This longarm is perfect for hobby quilters because it’s smaller, less expensive than you think, and easy to learn. The best thing about a longarm is it’s so much faster and easier to move over your quilt. But yep, it does take practice to be able to control it and stitch precisely!
I have my Qnique set up on the Q-Zone Hoop Frame. This frame can be set up as a sit down or standing frame. You can also use your home sewing machine on this frame and upgrade to a longarm machine later. Click Here to see how that works.

This design is a combination of two existing designs: Stippling and Star Flower. Make sure to check the other tutorials to learn more about these designs and quilt them on their own!
Difficulty Level – Beginner. I found this very easy, even though my travel stitching wasn’t perfect. The steps are easy to memorize at least, and it doesn’t look that bad if your quilting isn’t perfect.
Design Family – Independent. This wiggly design can go just about anywhere! Fit it into tiny spaces and around complex applique. But watch out because the Star Flower motifs are pretty eye-catching. You don’t want to stitch them next to the star of the show or there will be two stars of the show. And that doesn’t really work, does it?
Where to Quilt It? – Because Stippling is the linking design to the Star Flower motifs, this design is going to be great All-Over quilting design, or at the very least, quickly covering large quilt blocks.
Star Flower Stipple definitely wanted to expand and cover a lot more space than I gave it on this small quilt. If you stitch the starting straight lines 6 inches long, you could potentially have a star flower that takes up a massive amount of space! That is the key to quilting more quickly – covering a lot of space with every motif you stitch.
Let’s go quilt,
