Walking Foot Quilting on a Scrappy Pinwheel Block
Welcome back to another home machine quilting video for the Scrappy Pinwheel Quilt Block! We’re walking foot quilting this month’s Friendship Quilt Along block. If you missed last week’s post, click here to watch how we pieced this month’s pinwheel block.
For walking foot quilting, I set my stitch length to 1.5 mm and place my Queen Supreme Slider to the left side of my machine. You have to position the slider OFF the feed dogs because for walking foot quilting you need those feed dogs to work!
After toggling with the settings to get everything just right for walking foot quilting, I marked the block with my ceramic marking pencil to make the super spiral design easier. I definitely recommend marking when quilting Super Spiral so you’re sure it’s spinning in a clockwise direction on your quilt.
The hardest part to quilt on a Super Spiral is in the very center!
It’s important to quilt the spiral turning in a clockwise direction so as you stitch less and less quilt will be tucked into the arm of the machine. If you get started quilting in the opposite direction, you’ll end up with the ENTIRE quilt block in the arm of your machine, which will be absolutely no fun!
Let Your Walking Foot Do the Work!

Take your time travel stitching around the corners to take the curves all the way to the edges of your block.
Starting in the center of the spiral means you’ll have two loose threads on the quilt surface that may get in your way. Check out my detailed tutorial on burying loose thread tails in the middle of the quilt. This method secures the threads so your quilting won’t unravel!
I had a great time quilting this super spiral on this month’s scrappy quilt block! I love the fact it looks just as good on the back as it does on the front.
