Quilting with Rulers on a Longarm on the Scrappy Tracks Block

Today we’re jumping on the Grace Qnique 21 longarm and Continuum frame to quilt out our eleventh block, the Scrappy Tracks Block! We’re almost done with our Friendship Quilt Along with this scrappy longarm block–just one more to go!

Click Here to check out the Super Slide Ruler I used to create the deep curving lines. I love using this ruler to quilt borders and curving lines in sashing too. It’s a terrific ruler because you have the same curve on both sides which makes it very easy to quilt long lines continuously over your quilt.

The Ditcher Ruler is coming soon! I promise!

Quilting with Rulers on a Longarm

My biggest tip for quilting with rulers on a longarm might surprise you. I think it’s easiest when you advance the quilt towards your body, away from the back rail. Now that I have a 21 inch longarm, it can be hard to keep a good grip on my ruler and machine when it’s right up against the back bar.

The solution is to roll the quilt back across the frame so the area you are quilting is closer to your body. This way you can grip the quilting ruler and make sure it doesn’t tip as you quilt your design.

So if I was practicing what I preach, I’d have rolled the quilt block back a bit so I was closer to the border design. While it might limit the space I have to quilt in, it would result in more control over the ruler. And that makes for a more comfortable quilting experience!

With Scrappy Tracks done, we have only two more blocks to piece and quilt together to finish the Friendship Sampler Quilt Along! See you November 1st for block 12 and our bonus block 13!

Let’s go quilt,
