Ruler Quilting on the Scrappy Pinwheel Block
Last week I quilted my Scrappy Pinwheel Block with walking foot quilting. Now I’d like to quilt this block again with rulers on my longarm machine. Watch this quilting video to see how this worked:
Click Here to find this quilt block pattern. This is our 6th block for the Friendship Quilt Along which means we’re nearly halfway done! This block was intentionally designed to be simple and quilted quickly so you can have extra time to catch up on any past blocks if you’ve fallen behind.
I used the Slice Quilting Ruler to quilt all of the straight lines within this quilt block. Unfortunately the pattern I choose was hard to remember once I advanced the block through the frame. Watch out for that yourself and make sure to snap a picture of your block so you don’t forget how it was quilted!
Tips for Ruler Quilting a Supersized Scrappy Quilt Block
The #1 tip for quilting this block is to break up the space in sections. The easiest way to do this is to quilt one design in a pinwheel triangle, and one design in the background. But make sure to quilt the background in such a way that the quarters of the block don’t connect. Otherwise you’ll have to break thread and reconnect with those thread breaks when you advance the quilt.
Of course, that’s not a deal breaker. I’ve been doing that a lot lately on my Q-Zone hoop frame, but I typically like to avoid breaking thread many times because it’s time consuming.
If you haven’t yet joined us in the Friendship Quilt Along, no worries! Now is the perfect time to join us because this month’s block is faster and easier than the others we’ve made so far.
Our Quilt Alongs are set up to be joined in at any time and you can quilt the blocks at your own pace and leisure. The Scrap Pinwheel block is a fun and easy block and excellent for getting started!
Let’s go quilt,
Leah Day
