Day 58 – Flame Key

After scrolling back through my growing lists of designs, you can start to notice patterns and especially my favorite designs: flame shapes and circles!

Here’s another flame texture to add to our growing repetoire: Flame Key.

And here’s the list of other flame inspired designs: Gentle Flames, Swirling Flames, Fiery Comet, Flame Flower, and Flame Stitch.

Inspiration – While working on Greek Key and Curvy Key, I just thought how cool it would be to have a flame design that interlocked in the same way. I think the further we get in this project, the more variations on top of variations we will start to see!

Design Family – Edge to Edge. This means the filler design will be very easy to stitch in open areas or expanded over your quilt top, but probably not the best choice for tight, complicated areas.

Difficulty Level – Beginner. Really you’re just zig – zagging across your space with flame shapes, it can’t get much easier than that!

Directional Texture – All Directions. Even though this is an edge to edge design that would normally give off a very plain, horizontal or vertical texture, Flame key is wiggly and swirly enough that it really makes a texture in all directions.

Suggestions for Use – Well, in spite of my last post about Quilting for Show, I really feel that there are times when a nice, overall filler design is just want the doctor ordered.

If you want a quilt finished quickly so it can get out of your sewing room and onto a bed, use this Flame Key design over the surface with 1″ space between the stitching lines.

If you want to quilt for show, use this design with 1/8″ between the stitching lines and only in the sashing. It’s sure to look great in either situation!
