Intentional or Accidental Mistakes

free motion quilting | Leah DayIt’s Wednesday again and what am I working on? More photos for the book How to Piece Perfect Quilts! This week I’ve been stitching and photographing piecing mistakes, like mismatched seams and blunt triangle points.

I decided to add photos of mistakes because I remember that being such a confusing part about quilt piecing. WHY is this happening? What can I do better next time? It’s a fun addition to the book because I can answer those questions and take some of the mystery out of perfect piecing.

But I also made a few mistakes all on my own, mostly because I got in a hurry and didn’t take the time to double check what I was doing. When piecing a 4 patch block I accidentally forgot to piece right sides together and ended up with this:

Then after ripping and piecing it back together again, I realized I’d pieced the two strips opposite of what I needed! Argh!

Eventually I got it all turned around right and finally pieced together correctly. I went into these mistake shots thinking it would be difficult to make the intentional mistakes needed for the book. I was sort of right – it’s far easier to make accidental mistakes instead!

Let’s go quilt,

  3. Thank you for sharing this. I get really hard on myself for doing stuff like that. Now I can atop beating myself up, knowing it happens to everyone, even the professionals.
