#425 – Free Motion Quilt Hobbit Holes
It’s design time! Last week we learned Broken Eggs which was definitely on the complex side. This week let’s try something a bit simpler like this Hobbit Holes design:
I remember reading The Hobbit for the first time in 5th grade and it was really my first experience with fantasy fiction. I still love reading books about dragons, giant eagles, and wizards, so if you have any favorites, make sure to share them in the comments below!
This is an echoing design, but it’s a bit of a cheat like Echo Shortcut. The way it’s stitched will make it very fast to fill large areas in your quilt. Now I just need to make a few designs inspired by dragon fire and unicorn horns and we’ll have the makings for an awesome fantasy quilt!

If you are looking for a great fantasy read Id strongly recommend the Merlin trilogy written by Mary Stewart. I've lent my copy to my godson and have forgotten one of the titles but two are The Hollow Hills and The Crystal Cave. They are great books – I've loved them from my teenage years.

Leah, this pattern looks just like oyster shells to me. They grow in clumps like this and the shells have that same sort of striations around the edges! So, I guess in my mind this will be oyster shells. I'll need to find a design I can use these on soon.

Dragonriders of Pern series written by Ann McCaffrey – the best! The dragons create flame by chewing a type of rock so I'm thinking flame shapes with pebbles inside! Thanks for all your inspiration!
My absolute favorite fantasy series is the Ryiria Revelations from Michael J. Sullivan!
You, as well as your son, James, would probably love the Septimus Heap books (the 7th is due out next month) by Angie Sage. The first one is Magyk.
Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles. Only books one (Th Name of the Wind) and two are available (No Mans Fear, I think the second is called). I've read them both and now listening to them as I commute to work. Highly entertaining.
