  1. hmmmmm, starting small seems to me to be the best option. It would let you get your feet wet, to see if you want/or cut out to be a business owner. I like the minimal risk. I haven't kept up with your business posts. I plan on going back and reading because I am interested in a small, very small business. If you haven't talked about it yet, could you talk about picking out a business name? With all the copyright infringement blah blah blah, that seems to me to be the first scary thing about owning a business.

  2. I wrote and self published an e-pattern this year for my 'bohemiannie! bag' and every time an order comes in for it, I'm delighted and a little amazed. I wrote, rewrote and wrote it again and I really think that anyone with any sewing experience can produce it. I might not make tons of money but it does promote my business in a small way and I love knowing that my bohemiannie! bag is hanging off of one more shoulder.

You are so right about starting small. When my hubby & I began our online fabric shop over 8 years ago we started with 6 bolts of fabric!! For real! It's now grown to about 2000 bolts but we've never had to go into debt for it either. We wanted to make sure that if our business were to go south we could sell off our inventory and be ok.

Your idea about a niche market is right on the money, too. We can't carry it all so we order only certain things from certain vendors (ie Hoffman batiks, Moda precuts, etc.) It's worked so far but we've had to really limit ourselves and focus on our market so we don't get lost in the sea of online shops out there!

    Keep the great posts coming!!

  4. Thank you for another great and informative article. I've been thinking and doing some research about purchasing from a distributor, but truthfully, I'm a little bit scared! Hearing it from others is helpful. Have a super day!

Thank you so much for this series. I am slowly working on turning my quilting hobby into a business, and while I've read plenty of material about running a business, yours is the first that is specific to quilting. Very helpful.
