Free Motion Quilting – Confused Spiral #213

Here’s a fun new quilting design called Confused Spiral. This is a fun combination of Basic Spiral and Square Spiral wondered what would happen if the two were combined:

Today’s going to be a very fun day! I’m working on a new quilt shop update that will add many new items to the store (including the new book and DVD), finishing up the videos and then getting off the computer to go quilt.

Now let’s get back to Confused Spiral and learn how to quilt it:

Difficulty Level – Beginner. This is a really simple design – first stitch three sides of a square, then stitch inside the square with a circular open spiral. Spiral back out and switch back to straight lines and right angles as you stitch the next square shape and spiral into it as well.

Design Family – Independent. Most spiral designs are Interlocking designs which mean they do not touch sides (no traveling) but they do fit together and “lock” to create the design.

The most important thing with this design type is simply to keep your distances consistent and even. If your starting spiral has lines 1/4″ apart, keep all your spirals roughly the same for a really beautiful thread texture.

Directional Texture – All Directions. This design doesn’t create loads of movement like Snake Paisley or Swirling Water, but it does create a bold, showy texture on the surface of your quilt.

Suggestions for Use – For some reason I keep thinking about piecing today! Maybe I’m craving a little cutting and piecing quiet time.

I keep thinking about very simple 9 patch blocks, pieced a bit small to finish at 6″. I think Confused Spiral would look great stitched within each patch to create a bit more movement in each block. Hmmm…might have to give that project a try today too.
