Day 115 – Mesh Curtain

This design is also featured in the DVD Beginner Free Motion Quilting Fillers, as well as the ebook From Daisy to Paisley.

Recently Josh and I went to see Avatar, one of the most visually spectacular movies I’ve ever seen.

One thing I loved about the movie was the aqua blue and brilliant green colors. These are two colors that I rarely use in my quilts, but I definitely plan use them more in the coming year.

Speaking of Avatar, several times in the movie trees with long, wavy leaves would hang down like a curtain, almost like a weeping willow. I found this very inspiring and created this design after the movie:

free motion quilting | Leah DayToday was our first day with the kitchen almost totally back to normal. All that’s left is grout and then it will be done!

To celebrate I got up this morning and cooked sausage, eggs, and french toast. I know I’ve been talking about eating more vegetables. Do the spices I used in the eggs count???

Ha! It just felt wonderful to get back into cooking again. It’s such a relief and I already know that Tuesday, when everything is complete and my handyman doesn’t show up in the morning, I really will feel like 2010 has started.

But enough about cooking (I’m getting hungry again!) let’s learn how to quilt Mesh Curtain:

Difficulty LevelBeginner. This is a super simple design that everyone can definitely master. It’s as easy as drawing a curving line!

Design Family – Edge to Edge. This design is stitched from one edge of your quilting design to another, so it will be a terrific filler to use in the open, uncomplicated areas of your quilt, like sashing.

Directional Texture – Two directions. You can definitely see a horizontal / vertical texture with this design so definitely place it in the same direction you want your eyes to travel on the quilt top.

Suggestions for Use – Mesh Curtain is definitely simple and easy enough to stitch anywhere open on your quilt. Definitely try this design, even on a bigger scale, within your sashing or borders.

I saw Avatar last week and loved it!!! The tree of life(?) was so pretty. Cool that you made a quilting design out of it. BTW, when is your 3rd volume of the patterns coming out??

Hi Wilma – I'm really not sure right now. I'm planning to shoot a beginner DVD first, make a pattern for Winter Wonderland, THEN get back to Volume 3.

    I'm shooting for April!

    Cheers,

    Leah
