Quilting Design #3 – Gentle Flames
For Day 3 I was thinking about the landscape quilts I’ve created in the past. Every time I started quilting the green grass or hills in the landscape, I’d get very upset. The quilting fillers I was using didn’t look very good and certainly didn’t give the quilt the texture I was looking for. I think this Gentle Flames quilting design is going to work much better than anything I’ve used before!
I call it Gentle Flames because when oriented vertically, this stitch actually looks a lot like flames rather than an undulating landscape. It just goes to show that one quilting filler has unlimited uses and possibilities!

Inspiration – Definitely landscape quilts. Finding cool ways of quilting the grass area has always been a challenge. It will definitely be fun to experiment with widening Gentle Flame to create an appearance of distance in future quilts.
Difficulty Level – Beginner. Your biggest challenge with this quilting filler will be in fitting it to odd shaped spaces. If the space is too wide, it could make this filler more difficult to quilt.
Also if keeping your lines evenly spaced is a challenge, try using an open toe free motion foot and quilting gloves like Machingers. This will definitely help!
Design Family – Edge to Edge. This simple texture is quilted from one edge of your quilting space to the other. This makes it a great choice for quilting sashing and borders.
Directional Texture – 2 directions. This filler would look great placed horizontally, vertically, or even diagonally on a quilt, particularly in the sashing because it gives your eyes a place to go.
Suggestions for Use – Of course I’m going to cheap out and just tell you to go use it in a landscape quilt! This would also look great in flower leaves and stems or anywhere you want slight movement without a lot of fuss.
Feel free to use this free motion filler designs in your quilts!
Let’s go Quilt!
Leah Day
Leah, what a great idea this is! You're creating a fabulous resource for all machine quilters. I can't wait to see what you do each day!
It's unfortunate these videos are not available in full screen mode. Too tiny to see.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I believe the original player code is a bit outdated. I've updated it here so it can now be displayed at full screen.
For the other videos, just click on the video title at the top and it will take you to YouTube where you can watch them all full screen by clicking the little box shape in the lower right corner.
