Quilting Design #25 – Pebbles in a Stream
So far I’ve created two designs that made me think of pebbles in a stream: Tree Bark and Flowing Glass. I figured I should just stop beating around the design and quilt it already!
So this design really combines the long, slightly wavy lines of Tree Bark with the textured simplicity of Pebbling. The end result is a naturally flowing directional filler that looks great on it’s own or can be combined with other organic shapes for a beautiful work of art.

Inspiration: When I was a little girl there was a stream by my house. My favorite thing to do was rearrange the rocks so that the water could flow better. Although it wasn’t nearly as picturesque as this photo, it was still fun, wet, and messy!
Difficulty Level: Intermediate. The slightly wavy lines are easy, but pebbling can be tricky because of the amount of traveling over your previous quilting it requires. Because you don’t have to fill up nearly the same amount of space, this filler is much faster and easier than regular Pebbling.
Directional Texture: 2 directions. Place this design either horizontally or vertically on your quilt for a beautiful, organic texture.
Suggestions for Use: Needing to fill in the water area of a landscape? Here’s the perfect design for that. You could also think outside the box and apply this fill where it might not look like it belongs: surrounding Victorian feathers for example.
Let’s go quilt,

Love it! Thanks for the videos.
Great idea – love it:)

Hi Leah, Thanks for all the designs, I am planning to try lots of them. I have just used pebbles in a stream to all-over quilt a twin size quilt. I used a lot more stream and a lot less pebbles, and orientated the lines along the length of the quilt. This suited the celebratory theme of the quilt, more bubbles in champagne than pebbles in streams.
Thera are photos of the quilt on my Flickr stream. the whole quilt http://www.flickr.com/photos/polyquats/5024882249/in/set-72157600416967485/ and details like this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/polyquats/5024882449/in/set-72157600416967485/
Leah, I love these designs. I am going to use pebbles in a stream on a quilt that I am currently piecing. You are wonderful to share your ideas so freely!!
