Quilting Filler Design #33 – Fiery Comet
I’ve been on a real fire kick this week, checking out pictures of comets, volcanoes, and even bright colored flowers and the inspiration seems to be rubbing off with today’s quilting filler design: Fiery Comet:
It could be argued that I’m breaking my own rules with this one because the circles in my example are pretty big.
Honestly I think it looks better this way, but feel free to resize your circles to make them smaller and less noticeable within the rest of the lines of quilting.

Inspiration – The Hale-Bopp comet became visible when I was in 7th grade and for some reason I started thinking about it again and decided to see if the comet shape would work in quilting.
Difficulty Level – Intermediate. This is a pretty easy combination of circles and Gentle Flames. Just make sure your circles look like circles. My amoeba shaped comet really stands out of the crowd!
Design Family – Stacking.
Directional Texture – All Directions. Allow the comets to come from all different directions for a terrific all-over texture.
Suggestions for Use – Because the comet circles can draw a lot of attention, you’ll want to put this design in small places, like your sashing, that won’t overwhelm the whole quilt. Try it also for a background, but watch out that your comets don’t steal the show from your piecing or applique!

You make the rules, you can break them!
Love this, and part of the attraction is the bigger circles. Perhaps they could be filled in with spirals, but don't think it would work as well.

I just tried this in a thin border area, and because it was a little awkward, I decided to pebble in some of the small open areas so it wasn't too liney. I think it adds a new dimension to this very interesting design.
