Day 138 – Kelp Forest

I really love designing new fillers specifically for a quilt. I think this is really what designing is all about: fitting a design for a specific place and style for one particular quilt.

For the last couple of days I’ve been playing with different hair-looking designs. Here’s the first in this series called Kelp Forest:

As you can probably guess, this was a good first attempt, but I thought it ended up looking more like seaweed more than hair. Back to the drawing board!

Difficulty LevelIntermediate. This design works very similar to McTavishing, so it’s fairly easy to stitch. Just watch your lines and try to keep them consistent distances apart if that’s the look you’re going for.

Design Family – Edge to Edge. This design is worked from edge of your quilting space to the other, making it a great design for the open, uncomplicated areas of your quilts.

Directional Texture – 2 Directions. By working this design from edge to edge it has a very mild horizontal or vertical texture.

Suggestions for Use – This filler could still definitely work for hair, but I think it will work best in an oceanscape quilt as sea kelp.
