Border Quilting Design – Pyramids in the Sun – #521

I have a fun new border quilting design for you today! Let’s learn how to quilt Pyramids in the Sun, a cool design combining ruler quilting and free motion quilting together.

Click Here to find the 2-inch Circle Ruler I used in this video. I definitely needed to use this ruler to quilt the outer curves of my suns. Obviously I need more practice to get my echoes looking as good!

Find the Ditcher Ruler here – This is the ruler I used to quilt the evenly spaced straight lines for the pyramids and the pinstripe lines within. If you want to quilt right in the ditch, or travel stitch along straight lines, this ruler will help you do all that and more perfectly!

In this video I’m quilting on my Qnique 21 longarm machine and I’ve attached a ruler foot in order to quilt with rulers. This is my favorite foot and I generally always have it on my longarm, no matter if I’m quilting free hand, with rulers, or with QCT computerized automation. At any given time I might want to grab a ruler for stitching in the ditch or travel quilting and having to change feet is a pain. So this has naturally become my favorite foot and is on my longarm 99% of the time!

Border Quilting Design

In the video I quilted Pyramids in the Sun into a 4-inch tall rectangle, so this would work as a narrow border or wide sashing design. As for turning corners, I left that to you, but then decided to give it a sketch and here’s what I came up with:

Border Quilting Design Pyramids in the Sun

I like the design in the upper right corner with a 90 degree, square-ish pyramid filling in the corner consistent with the rest of the design. To quilt this, you’d first mark the corners to have that part of the design planned, then space out the remaining triangles down the length of your quilt.

It may take 10 minutes to plan your design before quilting, but that little bit of time will be well worth it as the border will fit and fill very easily. Anything that saves you from making a mistake that you have to rip out is a time saver in my opinion!

Filling the corners with cornerstones (box off the space, fill it with a different design) is also a great option and it will make Pyramids in the Sun easier to stitch into your quilt borders.

The only design idea I didn’t like was the lower left corner. That just looks weird. Again, spend some time planning the design in your quilt border before quilting and you won’t run into weirdness like this.

So that’s it for this funky border quilting design – Pyramids in the Sun! If you’d like to find more free motion quilting design tutorials, come check them out here.
