New Craftsy Class! Free Motion Fillers Volume 1

Yay! It’s finally time to announce my new Craftsy class: Free Motion Fillers Volume 1! Click here to enroll in this class for 50% off the regular price!

As you might remember, I was super busy this winter working on two projects that I kept rather secret. One is this beautiful throw sized (62 inches square) and covered with 50 beautiful designs:

free motion quilting | Leah Day

In designing this quilt, my goal was to provide a simple pattern that would be easy to piece so you could quickly create the top, then quilt from the center to the outside edges with multiple designs on a larger, bed quilt scale.

Now you might be wondering – are these designs different from what has been posted to the project?

The answer is yes and no. Yes, there are 11 new designs taught in this class that are brand new and have not been taught before! But that does mean 39 can be found somewhere online, either in a video or photograph I’ve posted in the last 4 years.

I figure it’s best to just get that question answered right up front because one of the most hurtful reviews I’ve ever gotten of my first Craftsy class was “As Seen on YouTube” where I was criticised for teaching designs and techniques that I’d previously shared in blog posts.

Well, there’s two ways of looking at this issue. On the one hand, I’m not twisting your arm to buy my class! Sign up if you want to make the quilt above, if you’d like to get to know 5 families of designs better, and if you’d like personal contact with me on a daily basis.

On the other hand, how many teachers teach class in person? How many share the same designs and ideas in class as they do in a book, a video, etc? The way I practice teaching is to shoot a video and post it for free, and the last thing I want is to feel BAD about teaching this way!

So you know the deal! 50 designs, 11 of them new, and if you click this link, you can get the class for just $19.99.

Hope to see you in class!

This is great news, I'm looking forward to it! I like that there's a self-contained project as part of the class.

  2. I love the photo they took of you for his class! You look so happy, like you glow! ♥
I'm not going to sign up right now since I'm still working through the other class but it did go to my wish-list right away! I'm sure it will be great again! Thank you for taking the time to put it all in one easy to access class. YouTube is okay but nothing can beat Craftsy classes! ♥

  3. Leah, I feel really disappointed that someone has criticised you for including material that you have previously already taught in your Craftsy class. I have been following you for years. While I am not really one to make a quilt from someone else's patterns, if I am ever looking for some inspiration for quilting ideas, your website is one of the first places I look! And am certainly guaranteed to find something inspirational and free!!!
I generally check what you are up to a couple of times a week because I find your artistic journey really fascinating. I loved how you made your designs open to anyone, and then when you began being recognised and valued for your talent through opportunities like Craftsy, I was really pleased for you. Your talent is immense and you should be able to make a living through your craft. I did wonder whether you would keep up your blogging and providing free inspiration and you have…
For anyone who has criticised you for including previously publicised designs in your class I have two things to say. The first is that incorporating previous knowledge with new knowledge is called 'scaffolded learning'. It is a technique that every decent teacher uses regardless of what they teach. (Perhaps` better known as practice makes perfect)
And secondly, as far as I am concerned Leah Day is surpassed by none when it comes to generosity with her time, designs and creative talents. I believe there is no-one who visits her website who does not come away with a fresh idea for something. So do NOT whinge as if this woman has not given you value for money.

You are wonderful, so never let the nasties get you down! For every mean comment, there are hundreds of silent, grateful fans, inspired by you day after day, and across the world. Paying for slick, interactive and self-contained classes would be worth every penny, I would think. That you generously inspire us for free as well is an added bonus! JJ

  5. Woohoo. I purchased your class right away, I am so pleased that there's instructions to piece this quilt too. Can't wait to start!

  6. Den and Peg says:

I'm almost speechless that anyone would make such nasty remarks in a review of your class. You are so generous with your knowledge of quilting. I've already learned so much from you and appreciate what you do. There are few people as generous with their knowledge and skill, and I truly appreciate it.

  7. Congratulations on your second Craftsy class. You are so generous with your designs and your videos, they are greatly appreciated!!

  8. Hope says:

I love your first Craftsy class, and was happy to sign up for it, even though you do the YouTube videos (probably because you do them, actually). I found it helpful on so many levels, and there is definitely more to it than what can be seen on YouTube – unless I've missed a whole lot of videos. You are a great teacher and the class is great value.

  9. LAQuilts says:

Just purchased the class. I am looking forward to seeing and learning the new designs.

  10. Sorry to hear you got a negative comment. I follow your online lessons and have purchased your Craftsy classes as well. I think with fmq that you can see the same design done by more than one teacher and the same teacher explainig it a little different and you can always learn something new. Maybe it's just me.
I too also love the Craftsy classes when you have a project to work on during the class.

  11. Jane says:

Hi Leah, I think it's wonderful that you offer Craftsy classes as part of your repertoire 🙂 Thanks very much for offering the class at half-price; it's very helpful and much appreciated!
    Best,
    Jae

  12. SewCalGal says:

I've been looking forward to this and very excited about your new class. While I love your books, DVDs and previous class on Craftsy, I also think this new class will be wonderful. And, what a great price.

I'll also do everything I can to help increase awareness of it. Great opportunity for any quilter interested in learning/improving their FMQ skills, including broading their skills by learning new designs. Very exciting news indeed!

  13. Malini says:

Hey, I am really EXCITED. I already signed up for the class this evening :-). Can't wait to watch it.

I agree with MC. Its nice to have a project within the class to work with.

    Thank you, Leah!

  14. Carla says:

Congratulations on another Craftsy class. I'm still working through the first one and your tutorials here, but I'll be signing up for this one soon.

  15. Kelly Vetch says:

I am signing up ASAP. I love the craftsy format, and I go back to lessons all the time, even ones I feel that I have mastered. Sometimes refreshing on certain techniques can remind you of important details that you have been skipping without realizing. Kind of like tucking loose threads into the quilt. Thanks for sharing and teaching in either format! It is very appreciated!

  16. Linda says:

I'm amazed that you got criticism for that. I've always felt extremely grateful that you posted freemotion videos for free (and they're wonderful). That was just an incredible bonus from the get-go. And your Craftsy class was great, very thorough and yet relaxed, just perfect. Not for a second did I feel any part of it was a 'repeat' of something I'd seen in the free videos! You've got amazingly good instincts, and as long as you keep following your heart, you've nothing to worry about from the occasional (and apparently grumpy-natured) critic.

  17. Sandra says:

Thank you so much. For what it's worth, whomever said "as seen on you tube" was just being snarky and mean. I bugged all my friends to sign up for craftsy just so I could earn a free class – YOURS! The information I have gleaned just from watching part of the 2012 free motion sampler class is amazing. Yes, your website is wonderful, the you tube videos are great, but for those of us who desire more in depth teaching, your craftsy classes can't be beat! And yes, I just signed up for this one. 🙂 Thanks to a wonderful friend!

  18. Sooli says:

Great news about the new class! I'll definitely be signing up, but it will be a month or two down the track. I'm always broke at this time of year! Don't worry about those negative comments, there is always someone who can't find something good to say. What about people who wouldn't have ever seen your website, who have only ever found you on Craftsy? They didn't care that some of your designs were available elsewhere. I'm sure that your class had more hints and tips to offer that weren't on your website. I'm also sure you had lots more positive comments than negative – let them be what you take from the experience! I'm glad to see you back again at Craftsy!

  19. jan says:

How exciting! I will put it on my wish list, after I finish the classes I am registered for!

  20. Jake says:

Those folks can take their hurtful reviews and stuff 'em! You rock, Leah. Everything I know about quilting I learned from you, not a (stuffy) quilt guild member, not a nice LQS owner Willing to help and not from My mom, but from you. I supported you with a few donations in your early days because I appreciate all of your generosity in helping. I was ready to give up quilting until I stumbled upon you. Thank you for sharing! Remember…tell them to stuff that review!

  21. I've signed up. I love your blog, the free videos, but I loved your other class the most. It was ORGANIZED. And you've learned a few things about teaching during the last few years. I want to learn.

  22. B says:

Just purchased my class. I don't see why you shouldn't sell your work, you are so kind to give it away for free. I would have bought the class even if I wasn't interested (which I am) as a form of thank you and pay back. Thank you

  23. Pat says:

Leah, I think whoever commented "As seen on YouTube" was just mean! I knew those things were on YouTube when I signed up for your first class but the Craftsy classes offer an advantage not available through YouTube. Whatever, I just signed up for this one, too, am am looking forward to it. You rock!

  24. Liz I. says:

Anyone who doesn't understand the difference between a Craftsy class and YouTube videos . . . hasn't taken a Craftsy class. The high quality and accessibility of a Craftsy class together with the interactive question and answer format makes it a rich, wonderful and convenient learning tool.

Thank goodness you are making your expertise available via Craftsy. We students are the beneficiaries.

  25. Jake says:

You said it! I totally agree with you.

  26. Leah,

I think you are awesome and amazingly talented at what you do. There's always going to be some critics. Please don't let them slow you down for a minute! Go girl, go! Sew, girl, sew! Have a super day!

  27. Southlady_1 says:

BTW, can you give us any info on the materials and if they are available?

  28. Southlady_1 says:

T-7 days til payday and I'll purchase your class! I WILL start it ASAP! As for the comments, that is a small petty person. Seriously??? You give and give. Your first class was wonderful. To that person(s), just go on and do it all through the FREE YouTube videos that you have GIVEN to the world!! I've learned so much from you! I appreciate it all and I love that you give us all the encouragement…uh, the PUSH off the cliff, to create something that speaks to us as the Duchess speaks to you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Yeah, I'm sure that I could use the videos on YouTube and I do watch them, but I don't mind spending a small amt to learn so much and sit in class with you.

  29. Leah, I absolutely LOVED your first (free!) Craftsy class. It gave me the push to try FMQ and for that I will be forever greatful. I've already signed up for the Free Motion Fillers Vol.1 and I'm really excited to get started with it.

There's always going to be critics out there. Hear what they say – if it has validity then learn from it. If the criticism is unwarranted then just move on.

You're a quilting celebrity, which garners some negative attention, but the majority is positive… and for good reason. You're an EXCELLENT teacher and generous with your time (FMQ project for example).

Thank you so much for all you do!

  30. MnMsZ says:

I'm so excited to take this class with you! This is exactly what I have been looking for to refine my FMQ skills. Thank you so much for designing this class.

  31. Jane says:

    Hi Leah,
Please don't let this person's unkind remark have you questioning yourself. Instead, concentrate on the many kind reviews left by those who appreciate all that you have so graciously brought to our world.
Some people aren't satisfied even when we're standing on one leg while spitting nickels….oh well, it's their loss. Let them utilize Craftsy's return policy.
Embrace your humanity ~ you are enough.
    Best,
    Jae

  32. Leah you have great advise as usual! Even though you are a FMQ superstar, it's nice to know you are human and have the same fears/obstacles we all have. I'm working on a project now, testing out my idea in muslin. Win or fail, I have decided to blog about it. I could opt not to. I mean, no one will ever know, right. But I think that when you are honest with yourself, and other people, it makes you more real to them. It's so much easier to connect and relate. Others can learn from your mistakes and who knows who can give you some advise you can learn from to! ALSO, you have come so far in video making!!! I have always enjoyed them, but you could be a news anchor, girl!!! YOu look so comfortable on camera. Nice job.

  33. Anonymous says:

You are so fabulous! I'm definitely signing up!

    Love your new hair do!

    Diane

  34. Sheila says:

I have just posted my pics of my completed Amy Gibson BOM following your FMQ class and a few modifications. I am thrilled with what i was able to achieve. Just signed up for the new class, i don't care if i have seen some of it before.. a refresher never did anyone any harm… keep on keeping on.

  35. sandra says:

Some people just like to whinge and be negative. Ignore them. I am in the process of working through your first class and love it and have signed up for the second. I want to really improve my machine quilting this year and your classes are an important part of that journey. And while it might be possible to watch some of what is in the classes on Youtube, it's much more convenient to watch it in a format such as Craftsy and not have to find and watch lots of different videos on youtube. Craftsy is not expensive so I don't know why people have a problem.

  36. kupton52 says:

Woo Hoo…..I just got both classes at the discounted prices….Thanks so much, not only for sharing your expertise but also for offering these to your blogfans at the reduced price! As for the "as seen on youtube"…well that goes beyond mean and nasty—-to the ungrateful and downright hateful. I hope you know how many quilters you have helped and encouraged with your FREE postings….And I hope "AS SEEN" stops to think how wealthy you could have become if you had charged the last 3 years! Thanks again…for everything.

  37. I will only say that IS NOT THE SAME!!! Craftsy courses are more like one on one classes and if some people would rather watch a 3 minutes You Tube video than a real class they are just cheap.

And speaking of cheap I will sign in to the course but is not really giving us a 50% discount, but only a 25%. I know is only 10$ diff but those 10$ can go to another Craftsy class or a charm pack!

Is there a mistake somewhere? Can you check what is going on there?

Thank you and just keep doing what you love HOW EVER YOU WANT TO DO IT and please please please keep sharing.
