Quilt Along #35: Goldilocks

It’s Quilt Along time and today we’re taking the design from last week, Flowing Lines, and filling those gaps with Stippling!

This is a beautiful design that will create a gorgeous texture on your quilts.  I’ve used this many times in goddess hair (hence the name Goldilocks), and the sashing (space between blocks) because it’s so easy to fit into and fill any narrow area.

Let’s learn how to quilt this design on the Batik Beauty Quilt:

Just remember if you’re craving more designs, all 365 designs shared between 2009 and 2011 are published together in 365 Free Motion Quilting Designs.  You can find this book right here in our quilt shop.

Now as for quilting Goldilocks, first review last week’s design Flowing Lines.

Then review the basic steps to Stippling.

Once you feel pretty solid with both designs, putting them together should be no problem!

One question I know I’ll hear is about density.  Yes, in the video, the Stippling had to be quilted on a 1/4″ scale to fit into the gap areas nicely.

Personally I see this as a trade off – yes, the quilt will be a BIT stiff in those areas, but it will also be covered with a gorgeous texture!  The one makes up for the other in my opinion.

If you’re really against this idea, simply stitch the design BIGGER.  Make the gaps HUGE so the stippling that goes inside them can be HUGE and then there won’t be an issue with stiffness or density in your quilt at all!

Instructions for Linking Up Your Blog:

1. Write your blog post. Publish it on your blog.

2. Copy the link of the specific blog post. This is not just the link to your blog itself (www.freemotionquilting.blogspot.com), but the link to the specific post: https://freemotionproject.com/2012/01/quilt-along-2-quilting-in-rows.html

3. Click the blue link up button above and paste your link into the box.

Keep in mind that you’re posting your progress from LAST week on THIS week’s post. This way you have time to watch the lesson, play with the ideas, then post your progress to the next quilt along. I hope that makes sense!

Also it’s not required, but highly appreciated and super cool to link back the Free Motion Quilt Along so everyone you know can come quilt with us too.

Let’s go quilt!

Very apt for me. I've planned to use this on my Mariner's Compass as it reminds me of beaches as the tide is going out and you have spots of sand that is exposed and wet and patches of sand that are still just under water. Beautiful and one of my favourites in your collection.

I love this pattern. How do you do your videos? Do you quilt all day long and keep taping? Did you plan out the whole quilt and all the patterns at once or do you decide along the way? I love your website and it has inspired me to keep going and learn FMQ along the way,(I have several quilts that I didn't want to FMQ because I am not good enough yet) to get out those UFOs and to even start a blog so I could share my projects. Thank you for all you do, Kristin
