Awesome Article in Quilters Newsletter Magazine
A few months ago I received an email from Bill Gardner with interest in doing an article in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine. Articles are always interesting because there’s a good bit of back and forth with photos and content, then a LONG wait, then finally, the article comes out in print.
But this article in particular was definitely worth waiting for!
This article can be found in the February / March 2012 issue of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine.
This is a really wonderful article and I’m so pleased with the way Bill put it together. I took a chance with the interview questions and candidly discussed the issues and themes of a few of my goddess quilts.
I actually said the words abuse and alcoholism and mentioned my inner negative voice and this was included in the article. Words like that are kind of like jack-in-the-boxes. Once they’re out, you can’t put them back in again!
Since reading it, I’ve been asking myself if this is the right thing to do. Am I too open? Am I too honest? Should I maybe start editing my personal history so it’s not so dark and gritty?
But upon further reflection, I’m always happy with my honesty. There’s a freeing quality to saying something aloud that might have previously stayed tucked away inside.
So I have to say of all the articles I’ve contributed to, I’m proudest of this article.
It also happens to be the prettiest, with My Cup Runneth Over, Shadow Self, Winter Wonderland, and Release Your Light all gracing the pages along with many designs from this project.
So if you don’t have a subscription and would like to read the article, keep an eye out for copies of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine this month!
Let’s go quilt,
Leah
I'll be watching for the article Leah. Good for you! Honestly is always a good thing and makes for great art!
Saw the article, thought is was brave and good too.
I also grew up in a home with alcoholism and abuse and I am glad we can speak about such things and acknowledge them so we can heal from them. I love your quilting and I appreciate your candor.
Way cool. Congratulations Leah. I look forward to reading this article.

A few quotes come to my mind:
"And the Truth shall set you Free!"
"Confession is Good for the Soul."
Congratulations, Leah. You're discovering great wisdom for yourself. {hugs}
I've enjoyed your quilting posts, but i'm enjoying your "self discovery" posts even more. I'm probably not really old enough, but i'm gonna volunteer anyway;
i'd LOVE to be your "surrogate mom". (Write or call anytime. lol)
=-)
I just finished reading the article. Congratulations!! I'm so happy that your hard work is being recognized and applauded.
So great for you đŸ™‚
Hope to be able to by the magazine. Have a great and kreative day.
Good for you.. congrat's. and it is always best to be proud of who you are.
Stay open and honest, Leah – people will respect you for it, and I think it's much healthier to acknowledge this stuff and have it all in the open. I admire you for facing it early in life: so many of us wait till the second half of life and then have aa hugee amount of accumulated baggage to sift through!
Looking forward to reading the article – somehow – QN isn't easy to find in the UK, and their website is defeating me at the moment!
I received my copy this week and was sooo pleased to see your lovely face on the first page that the magazine opened to!! "Wow, I know here," I said to myself. I thought the article was superb and your mentions of abuse and alcoholism is really no surprise. Afterall, you've put it on the internet, it's out there, anyone that reads your blog knows about it. It is one of the things that inspires your beautiful quilting. You did the right thing. You're a very brave and courageous young woman who is incredibly talented! And your ability to share openly in your art can help many people overcome their past too.
thank you!!
Leah, I do the SAME thing. Speak of the past, the negative. That's not to confuse with dwelling. I don't dwell or blame. It reminds me of where I come from and who I am. It also reminds me of who I DON'T want to be and what I want to protect my children from. To me, I don't feel bad about it. With each word coming out of my mouth is like one more hurt expelling from my body. It's healing.I hope to read your article:)
Hi Leah,
I just cracked open my QN mag this morning and saw the article about you and was surprised to see it since you hadn't mentioned it on your blog yet. Lo and behold here is your post! I haven't read the article, but I think it is ok to be honest about yourself. I think it helps people understand some of your work better to know your back story.
Keep up the good work!
Cindy
Congratulations! I eagerly await the magazine here in Down Under

I got the magazine in the mail a few days ago and was pleased to read the article. No surprises for me as I read your blog. You be as honest as you like, I'm sure it is a big help to people out there living through the same things. If anyone has a problem with it, then it is their problem not yours
Hi Leah.
Congratulations on the publication.

First thing I read in QNM when it hit my mailbox – congratulations!! Be very proud of yourself – the rest of us sure are!!!
Congratulations! I look forward to reading the article as soon as I can find a copy of the magazine.
Felicidades por tu artĂculo. IntentarĂ© encontrarlo aunque no serĂ¡ tareas sencilla.
Congratulations Leah! I've been following your blog for awhile and really enjoyed the article in QM. It was a great interview and your are a very talented woman and deserve to be reconized.
It was a pleasant surprise to open the issue and find such a lovely article about you. I said out loud (to no one) hey, I know her! At least I feel that way because of following your blog. Congrats!
Congrats on your article and especially for your honesty. I know that feeling of vulnerability….its scary. But it is a good thing. If you can help someone else to admit the truth about their past, that is very good! You may never know the effect of your honesty but if we have help others free themselves from the lies that they are the only one…then that is the best gift to give.
I received my copy of Quilters Newsletter and was so very proud of you and your success! I read your blog all the time and I am following along with the 2012 Quilt along. I have purchased some of your books and I did purchase the winter wonderland quilt pattern. I hope to turn it out in 2012! Congrats on all you success and I am going to go shut up and quilt now!
Oh no! The magazine I don't subscribe to. Gotta run out and get it. I'm following your free/motion quilting project and love it. And I love you for your honesty.
Congrats on the article. Just read it and realized I had found your blog a few years ago. This year I am focused on trying to improve my free motion so will be bookmarking you! Thanks for sharing your instructions.
I was happy to see the article about you and I thought it was perfectly fine that you mentioned dark things. Few people actually grow up in perfect circumstances and those that do probably don't appreciate it all that much! I was glad too that you mentioned how influential your guild was in getting you started. Few young quilters seem to value guilds as a resource.
What a lovely surprise to see you in QNM – I recommend your gorgious instructions to all freemotion addicts, it's so generous that you teach all this for free. Thanks !
I'll be honest with you Leah at first I interpretted your sharing of your dark moments as you called them as evidence of a deep open wound. I wasn't offended & it didn't think less of you & I didn't mind reading it. I thot we might have shared a similar type of abuse. But as I follow your blog & watch your videos your personality comes thru as very engaging & hopeful. I think like me, you're analyzing your past's effects on who you became, who you intend to be & conduct your life. So I've appreciated your sharing. I can't say much about your article because it's sitting on my desk unread but congratulations! But a thousand thanks for The FM Quilting Project. I've been too busy to post but I'm right there practicing each week.
