Drop Art Sashing Quilting Design #230
Our Modern Art sashing quilting design worked so well, let’s try it again with a Drop Art quilting design:
It’s finally starting to feel like winter here in NC – Finally! This has been the longest, warmest fall in my memory, but now things have finally turned back to normal and I’m watching a cool rain drizzle outside.
All those dripping raindrops off the side of my window made me start thinking about a new sashing quilting design, hence the name Drop Art.
Yay! My jacket pieces are quilted! Jacket construction can now begin! I’ll post photos and a walkthrough tomorrow on how I attach all the pieces and create a double sided, seamless jacket.
For now, let’s learn how to quilt Drop Art:
Difficulty Level – Beginner. Now that I think about it, this sashing quilting design reminds me of the song Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Kinda silly, but fun!
Design Family – Edge to Center. This is the perfect sashing filler design! You don’t have to keep it this simple either. Feel free to go inside each tear drop shape with pebbles or internal echoes for a slightly more complex version.
Directional Texture – 2 Directions. This design has a very clear horizontal or vertical texture. If you want something a bit more open and less dense, you can always quilt only one side of the Drop Art and leave the second half off. Either way, it’s a very fun design.
Suggestions for Use – This design makes me think babies and simple shapes for some reason. Maybe combine Drop Art with some big, bold shapes like hearts, circles, triangles, and squares and quilt it all into a cute baby quilt for someone special this holiday!
I do think this design will work best in the narrow spaces on your quilts. Having a specific sashing quilting design is so nice because this area of our quilts is often left open and really could be stitched up a notch with pretty designs.
Let’s go quilt,

I love your designs! I just started quilting and learned all I know mostly from watching your videos and a few articles here and there. My next quilt is going to be an Autumn theme and I was wondering if had any ideas for a fill in design? Maple leaves or something of that nature? Keep up the great work. I enjoy your videos each day.
Think I can do that one. You are so creative! I've practiced on potholders, with designs you've shown. Thanks, jo
Ok, I missed why you started in the middle of the side and they went back and did the other part of the same side? Why not go around the corner and save the traveling?
For some reason I can see ME doing this one – as much as I love all the designs I don't put myself as the doer of them.
Hi Mimi – Why did I start in the middle of the block? Because I was planning on stitching this differently, more like a feather, but changed my mind at the last minute.
Sorry if it's confusing, but really it's good to see that you can work from right to left or left to right. Direction doesn't matter so much as the rules of the stitch (tear drops stitched from edge to center).
I hope that makes sense!
Leah
Oh this is another super one for the 'must do' library
You mentioned "rain drops keep falling on my head",the tune stuck in my head! It is getting colder here also and I thought of icicles to come and remembered your "Cave Points" design. I will try to alternate drop art and cave points to see how it will look. Looking forward to seeing your new quilted jacket. The partial stitching you showed was beautiful.
I like this design will have to give it a try. Linda
