Day 188 – Feather Universe
We’re back with a More Fillers Monday and I’m finally reunited with my sewing machine (and family) after spending a wonderful weekend at NC Quilt Symposium.
So let’s continue with our filler project with another feathering design. This is Feather Universe!
I had such a great time at symposium, my head is literally bursting with new ideas for fun quilts and new quilting designs!
But I have to admit it – I’m really, really tired! I’m looking forward to several days of rest and relaxation, and maybe a bit of quilting of Shadow Self.
When I’m not quilting today I’ll be working on the pattern and videos for the Rainbow Flower Garden Quilt. This sweet Accu Quilt Go quilt is ready to be quilted and hopefully the hot pink thread I’ve picked for it will show up great on video!
Now let’s learn how to quilt Feather Universe:
Difficulty Level – Intermediate. Don’t let this design intimidate you! This design can be simplified by marking your foundational spiral and placing this in a circular area, not a square.
Design Family – Foundational. This design starts by setting your foundation, in this case a big spiral. You really want to take your time stitching the spiral because it really can make or break the design.
This design will work in any area of your quilt so long as you can stitch the spiral within the area easily. You probably wouldn’t want to place this right around a complicated motif as it would be hard to keep the spiral and feather shapes consistent.
Directional Texture – Center Focused. This is a really attention getting design so make sure to place it somewhere it can show off!
Suggestions for Use – Feathers and Flowers just seem made for each other! Try using this design as the center of appliqued or pieced flowers to add loads of texture and make your flowers really pop!

Leah, I just stumbled across your blog and love it… I have signed up to follow, but have a q for you… I would like to have all the pics of each of your free motion samples accessible, like right there in my studio… r u going to put this into a book later?
I am just trying to figure out a way to get each of your samples into my sewing room so i can flip thru them and find what i like for each project.
Hi Jackie – Yes, I do plan to publish a book of all of the designs in a year or so.
In the meantime, there are 2 workbooks available featuring 20 designs each and I do plan to create more downloadable workbooks soon.
The best thing to do is just start stitching yourself samples and put them together either in a quilt or a binder. This makes it really easy to see the textures and pick the design you want for your quilt.
