Day 187 – World of Stars
Welcome back for another edition of Totally Filler Tuesday! This is actually kinda weird because last Tuesday we learned Starfish, a cute star based design.
This week we’re back with another star based design! This filler is called World of Stars:
Yesterday was a very productive day, so today I can chill out and quilt more on Shadow Self.
All I have to do is wander around the house looking for all my quilts for the trunk show tomorrow and then write the lecture.
It’s amazing just how far and wide my quilts can go in a very short space of time, but I guess that’s a good sign that they’re being used and loved!
Inspiration – After stitching Starfish, I started wondering what it would look like if the design was echoed using straight lines, sharp angles, and many more echos per star.
The result is a pretty neat design! I honestly think it will look even better on a bigger scale and given some room to branch out.
Difficulty Level – Intermediate. When I first got started free motion quilting, sharp angles really cramped my style. It seemed like every time I had to stop and change direction I got distracted.
After some practice I learned how to like and now love sharp angles, but for a total beginner, you might experience the same mental weirdness whenever stitching this design.
Of course the moral of the story is to practice, practice, practice!
Filler design type – Echo. This design is created by first stitching the star shape, then travel stitching and echoing the design as many times as you like. It’s a great design for any area of your quilt.
Directional Texture – All directions. This design has a really fun, angular movement. Because I stitched it so densely, it ended up looking pretty flat, but I think if you expanded it a bit, the design would actually look better.
Suggestions for Use – Baby quilts are some of the funnest, quickest quilts to make, and they’re also some of the most commonly made for charity projects.
I’m actually organizing a charity project of my own for my local quilt guild, and I’ll share more about it later this month.
By October, we should have several quilts ready to quilt, and I’m thinking World of Stars will be a great stitch to use for a fast finish that still looks terrific!

Cool! I am just quilting a baby quilt at the moment and I've used bordered square blocks with a star fabric as one of the colours. I played around with lots of designs but I've ended up starting in the middle with a star and then echoing it again and again until it's really big. Now I'm filling in around it with a really big paisley. I like the contrast of the straight star lines and the curved paisley. I'll be posting it on my blog once I'm done.
That is a very cool quilting design, I just love it!
