Day 154 – Spiral Tulip

Tulips aren’t quite blooming yet, but I’ve gotten several magazine with beautiful pictures over the last few weeks that got me thinking.

I decided to try my hand at mixing (I guess crossbreeding would be a more apt term) spirals and tulips together to make one design.

It ended up looking kinda weird, but I’m sure there’s a place for it somewhere in a quilt!

Today has been a busy day. I quilted this morning then took James to a play date at the park and am now back home working on the site.

While website design might sound really boring and complicated, it’s really not and it’s one of the things I absolutely love about working online.

So keep a look out for a new update next week when I add a whole new selection of quilting books to the site!

Now let’s get back to learning how to quilt this Spiral Tulip:

Difficulty Level – Intermediate. This design is fairly easy, partly because the shape is extremely free form. So don’t worry too much about your tulip shapes looking exactly like mine, but instead let them be whatever size and shape you want!

Design Family – Pivoting. This is one of those designs that is formed from the center to the outside so you’ll want to put into a nice open area of your quilt.

Directional Texture – Center Focused. This design is less attention getting than most of our center focused designs, but it still supplies a very interesting, bulls-eye like texture.

Suggestions for Use – I’ve been knocking a new idea around in my head to combine applique designs with free motion quilting designs. Try replacing an applique block with just a quilted block in your next applique quilt and see what I mean!
