Day 53 – Heart Paisley

Maybe I am on another holiday kick cause today’s filler design is going to be perfect for Valentine’s Day. Here’s Heart Paisley!

My mother is the world’s best holiday decorator. For Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter, and Halloween she pulls out boxes from the attic and proceeds to trash the whole house while she decorates.

It makes a big mess, but once she finishes, the house looks very festive and cheerful.

But no holiday can surpass Valentine’s Day, her favorite holiday. Maybe next year when I’m not neck deep in DVD editing details I’ll be able to make her a pretty heart and love inspired quilt.

Or I’ll just draw a picture of what it will look like and give her a IOUAQ (I owe You a Quilt).

When it doubt and time is lacking, a nice promise of a quilt and a gift card to Victoria’s Secret will make up for just about anything!

Okay, let’s get back to Heart Paisley:

Inspiration – I’ve been working more on my Filler Design Theory and answering some quilty questions: Are there really a limit to the number of shapes in quilting? Or are we limited by the ways we FORM the shapes?

My personal opinion is that there is an unlimited number of shapes, AND there is an unlimited number of ways to form the shapes, but that formation is easier to learn than the shapes themselves.

For example, take Paisley. Chances are you’ve probably stitched this at some point in your life and you know how it works and could probably stitch it in your sleep with very little practice.

Now, because you’re so well acquainted with Paisley, changing the shape from a tear drop to a heart will not be difficult. You simply change the core shape, but the way the design is formed stays exactly the same.

So of course you can expect to see many new modifications of Paisley coming your way! We’ve already had Pointy Paisley and Mussel Shell, but what about Star Paisley and Cross Paisley and even T Paisley?

The possibilities are endless, though obviously my creativity with the names needs some work!

Difficulty Level – Intermediate. Yes, this is a fairly easy design to master. Even if you’re just starting out, give it a try and see what you come up with. Chances are you’ve drawn enough hearts in your life to have the shape thoroughly logged into your muscle memory!

Design Family – Pivoting. In case you missed the lecture above, this is a paisley shape. This means Heart Paisley will work perfectly in areas small and large. It’s bendy and easily manipulated so it works great in tight spots and complicated situations.

Directional Texture – All Directions.

Suggestions for Use – Use this filler here and there, use this design anywhere! Gotta love Dr. Seuss!
